Just below gamma is the alert and busy-mind state of beta waves, and the lowest range of the gamma state overlaps with beta frequencies. 

Below beta, we find the open-minded, inspirational states of alpha waves and then the dreamy, relaxed, and meditative realms of the theta waves. The slowest frequencies of all are the deep-sleep regions of delta waves. But gamma frequencies represent the fastest vibrational energy our brain produces. 

Besides oscillating quickly, gamma waves also have the lowest amplitude, or up and down motion, of all brainwaves. Gamma brainwave frequencies appear on EEG machines as small, rapid, and highly focused brain activity, most often crossing and connecting multiple areas of the brain. Interestingly, gamma waves also sometimes appear when only a single inhibitory neuron fires. 

Several studies of the gamma frequency range show they are abundant in talented musicians, top-notch athletes, people with a photographic memory, meditating Tibetan Buddhist monks, and those reaching the highest levels of performance in their field.

Recent research by Dr. Joe Dispenza suggests inducing gamma brainwave states may boost profound and beneficial personal changes in a person’s attitude and behavior.

On the other hand, people with a variety of mental health conditions have reduced amounts of these types of activity, suggesting this brainwave pattern is essential to a fully functional, healthy mind. 

When gamma brain waves were first discovered, scientists thought they were a type of background noise and not crucial for understanding how the brain works. 

However, further investigation has uncovered that these brainwaves appear most often when people experience emotions of universal compassion, altruism, and spiritual understanding. This finding has recently prompted investigators to look further into the function of these electrical frequencies in the brain. 

When do Gamma Brain Waves Occur?

High gamma states appear during periods of intense learning, problem solving, and decision making. They also appear during feelings of profound spiritual alertness, as seen in Buddhist monks during deep meditation sessions. 

Gamma waves are strongly associated with the visual cortex of the brain, and they occur when the full spectrum of our mind’s potential is engaged and synchronized. Gamma activity appears during:

The fast-reacting people had a burst of gamma waves at 40 Hz just before and just after they reacted to the stimulus. The slow-reacting group showed a single burst of gamma waves just before responding, suggesting that gamma waves play a function in a person’s ability to respond to the environment.

Meditation research

Another investigation compared gamma brain waves in three groups of meditation practitioners and a control group of people who did not have experience meditating. The study results found a significantly higher amount of gamma waves present in the three groups of expert meditators compared to the control group. They also found they could distinguish between the meditation groups based on the type of gamma brain waves each produced. In conclusion, the researchers noted that meditation and its benefits appear to be associated with differences in the production of these frequencies. 

Overall, neuroscience research show that regularly meditating improves thinking, perceptions, emotional processing, and the ability of the brain to perform regeneration of neurons, known as neuroplasticity, especially in the prefrontal cortex and areas of the brain associated with sensations in the body. 

What is the Function of Gamma Brain Waves?

The investigation into gamma waves is ongoing, and scientists are still exploring how these neurological frequencies affect consciousness, creativity, and brain function in human beings. 

Some insight into the function of gamma frequencies comes from exploring what happens when a person lacks these brainwave frequencies. A deficiency of gamma brain waves appears in people who suffer from: 

  • Mood disorders
  • Major depressive disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Schizophrenia 
  • Epilepsy

In particular, depressed test subjects in these studies showed less gamma activity present when doing tasks requiring emotional, spatial, and mathematical effort.

Schizophrenic test subjects showed reduced gamma waves when doing tasks requiring whole-brain thinking tasks. Antipsychotic medications did not restore gamma wave levels in these test subjects. 

Researchers are also investigating using 40 Hz stimulation in people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorders. 

Clinical trials of gamma wave therapy in people with AD have resulted in mild improvement of cognitive function after exposure to visual and auditory signals of 40 Hz frequencies. However, researches are still unsure of why this happens. 

Gamma frequencies and intention 

One inventor has received a patent for a machine that uses gamma activity to detect positive and negative intention in a person by measuring their gamma brain waves using an apparatus placed on the person’s head.
