Music can influence our feelings in many ways. Being roused by music, hearing music during doing housework or sports or just listen to calming down: music supports our mood properly in every way. Music exhilarates and encourages our thinking and doings. Today, the circumstances of living of many people, especially in the western civilisation, are determined by stressing, pressuring and often not freely chosen criteria. Many of them live a frantic life, the heads full of thoughts of dates and doings, which have to be fulfilled and do not let them find relaxation.

Most people probably choose quiet and harmonic sounds to calm down, clear their minds and sort out the thoughts of the day. They aim to relax mind and body, hoping to become mentally free and, as a result, be able to fight stress and tension of the body. Brainwave music is a kind of music, which may influence our attitude regarding an upcoming activity by the so-called brainwave entrainment, which is a special way to influence individual brainwaves by music.
Brainwave entrainment and binaural beats
Brainwave entrainment bases on scientific research results of the beginning of the twentieth century (see Wikipedia). H. Berger detected the Alpha-waves, which could be measured as electric impulses at frequencies between 12 to 30 Hz. Further research showed that the intensity of the Alpha-waves can be improved using oscillating lights. This was the first scientific proof that brainwave entrainment is possible. The scientists Dempsey and Morison demonstrated in the forties of the twentieth century that entrainment of brainwaves is possible by sensorial stimulus as well. Successful activation of brainwaves with clicker training at a click frequency of 15 Hz, as modern animal trainer like it to use with dogs and horses, was detected end of the fiftieth. This demonstrated the possibility of auditive brainwave entrainment. Forty years after detection of the Alpha-waves the possibility of brainwave entrainment was accepted and people start to use different lights for brainwave entrainment. Good result could be demonstrated with patients who needed far less narcotics before a surgery or dental treatment. In the sixtieth several publications referred of less loss of blood, less experience of pain and a decrease of anxiety during treatments. A scientific study published by Dr. Oster in “Scientific America” in 1973 demonstrated the successful use of music for brainwave entrainment. He reported of the impact of two music tones, which he combined to a rhythmic beat, to the brainwaves of his test persons. He called these combined tones “monaural” and “binaural beats”. Dr. Oster’s research showed that monaural beats resulted in a very strong electric activity of the cerebral cortex, whereas binaural beats created barely any activity. The beats are described more detailed in a separate chapter.

Brainwave music with isochronic tones
Nearly ten years later the isochronic tones and their impact to the brainwave activity were detected. During the eighties and nineties of the twenties century researchers all over the world concentrated on studies with up to 5,000 patients to prove application possibilities of visual and auditive brainwave entrainment to receive relaxation, synchronisation of both brain hemispheres and to heal or lessen several diseases like headaches, ADHD, learning disorders, depression and others. The results of the scientific studies were quite promising. Therefore, many studies are ongoing especially at the psychological field and some of the modern EEGs are provided with the technical equipment for brainwave activation yet.
Summarising the above, visual and auditive driven activation of human brainwaves underwent intensive scientific research for more than eighty years. The results are astonishing and promising. Nevertheless, compared to the proven positive impact of brainwave entrainment the technique is quite unknown. This may be a direct result of the fact that brainwave entrainment is simple to perform, reasonably priced and may be performed by everybody at home. Pharmaceutical companies as the most important information platforms for medical information and supply are not interested in a technology, which provides no profit. Moreover, our modern society is more convinced of synthetical medicinal products against various diseases mainly than of the use of alternative methods, which often are cheaper as well.
Scientists and users of brainwave entrainment confirm by research and self-experience that brainwave music pushes an individual far more specific and faster to a more positive mental and emotional attitude regarding his doings than other methods. How this may work will be explained more detailed in the following chapters.
